Hypnosis is a natural state of mind although opinions do differ on the exact definition of it. It is not necessarily a trance state or sleep state even though when hypnotised the person might appear to be asleep.

Brain scans on people who are in hypnosis state show that brain wave activity moves from a Beta state to an Alpha state, and sometimes a Theta state. This is not dissimilar to the pattern of brain activity during meditation.



Do I lose control if I am hypnotised?

Regardless of whatever or whomever hypnotises you, you always have the appropriate power to resist hypnosis. Once you have realised that you are still in control, when you decide how deeply you want to go into hypnosis then you realise what hypnosis actually is. Your hypnotherapist is a guide and assists you on your journey. Only you however can make the change.

Knowing that you are still in control is empowering and often the more frequently you go into hypnosis aware that you are doing it, the more easy it is to let go as you are more confident in your ability to stop a session if it has become uncomfortable.

Some hypnotherapists use the knowledge that actually we are always in hypnosis and will have an open discussion with you, just altering their language patters, using suggestions relating to your goal and the changes you wish to make, without taking you into a ‘trance state’ at all.

How will it feel to be hypnotised?

Contrary to much speculation, people are often surprised that they can hear every word and could get up and walk away from their hypnotherapy session at any time. Unless you enter a deep state, you may not seem any different other than being very relaxed.

Hypnosis is comparable to drifting off to sleep, at the point where you are not totally awake or totally asleep. You may feel either a sense of weightlessness or heaviness as your muscles relax. There is no standard “feeling” for hypnosis and your hypnotherapist will be able to re-assure you and help you to relax and make the most of your session.
