A new study by The World Health Organization (WHO) and Imperial College London has recently reported that the number of obese children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 worldwide has risen tenfold in the last 40 years. The report shows that if this trend in behaviour continues then more children and young people in this age bracket will be obese than moderately or severely underweight in just 5 years’ time.
The study analysed the data from almost 130 million people aged over 5 years old (31.5 million people were in the 5 to 19 age bracket and 97.4 million were aged 20 or over) which means that this study can boast the largest ever number of participants involved in an epidemiological study.
What is Epidemiology?
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events (including disease), and the application of this study to the control of diseases and other health problems. Various methods can be used to carry out epidemiological investigations: surveillance and descriptive studies can be used to study distribution; analytical studies are used to study determinants.
**Obesity in adults
As announced on the World Obesity Day website on 11th October 2017, it is not just the children and young people that are affected by obesity and they advise that if current trends continue, 2.7 billion adults worldwide will suffer from overweight and obesity by 2025. Estimations show that if we don’t take urgent action to treat or prevent obesity, the annual global medical bill for treating the consequences of obesity is expected to reach US$1.2 trillion per year by 2025.
